EC fan retrofits for AHUs and FAHUs in the UAE

An EC fan retrofit can be an option for improving the operation of an existing air handling unit without replacing every component. RGS assesses the current fan arrangement, airflow requirement, controls and remaining unit condition before recommending an upgrade.
Energy is one of several reasons to review HVAC performance. A fan proposal should also consider ventilation requirements, cooling duty, noise and the building’s operating needs.
What the assessment covers
- Existing fan type, drive, motor rating and operating strategy.
- Required airflow and pressure duty, including changes to the building’s use.
- Current power demand and operating hours where measurement is included.
- Casing, coils, access and available installation space.
- Electrical supply, controls and BMS compatibility.
- Shutdown requirements and installation sequencing.
What may change with an upgrade
Drive arrangement. A direct-drive selection removes the belt and pulley arrangement where these are present on the original unit.
Control. A suitable speed-control strategy can match operation more closely to the required duty while maintaining necessary ventilation and cooling.
Fan configuration. Single-fan and multiple-fan arrangements are assessed against space, duty and serviceability. Continued operation following a fan failure depends on the design; it is not an automatic feature of every fan wall.
Monitoring. Available signals and BMS integration depend on the selected fan and controls. These should be specified as part of the scope.
Build the case from your operating data
Potential savings depend on the original equipment, control strategy, pressure duty, operating hours and final selection. RGS can compare a measured baseline with the proposed arrangement and estimate annual consumption and simple payback using stated assumptions.
We do not apply a universal percentage saving or payback period to every building. Post-installation checks should be planned so results can be compared under suitable operating conditions.
Retrofit or replace?
If the casing and coils remain serviceable, a fan-section upgrade may be worth considering. If there is extensive deterioration, unsuitable capacity or limited remaining life, replacement may be the better investment. The assessment should explain both options where relevant.
